Andre Ward was born in San Francisco, California on February 23, 1984, as the son of Madeline Arvie Taylor and Frank Ward. Ward’s interest in boxing began in 1993 when his father took him to an Oakland boxing gym. Virgil Hunter, who is also his godfather, trained him. Ward was educated at Hayward High School, which is located in the East Bay. He began boxing training in 1994 and hasn’t lost a fight since February 1998.
