Andrea Ghez is an astronomer and professor of physics and astronomy at UCLA. Her research uses the adaptive optics technology found on the Keck telescopes. Her team is currently conducting research on star-forming regions and the Milky Way’s Sagittarius A* black hole. They are gaining knowledge about this region by examining the kinematics of stars in the Milky Way’s core. Using the W.M. Keck Telescope, Ghez and her colleagues could capture images of the Galactic core. Sagittarius A* is one of the most well-studied supermassive black holes.
On October 6, 2020, she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics alongside colleagues Roger Penrose and Reinhard Genzel for discovering black holes in the galactic core. Additionally, her study group on Sagittarius* has been working diligently and yielding positive results. Before her work on Sagittarius A*, she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2004. Likewise, she is a American Physical Society (APS) member.
