Mercedes Hall and Larry Hall welcomed Michael Anthony Hall into the world on April 14, 1968. His mother and father, who owned auto body shops, were also blues-jazz singers. Hall’s parents divorced when he was just six months old. Their only child was him. He was born in the Boston, Massachusetts neighborhood of West Roxbury. He and his mother migrated to New York City after departing for the West Coast.
