As his family relocated to the United States, he grew up in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Luyendyk’s father was a former race car driver known as “The Flying Dutchman.”

Luyendyk began his racing career with go-kart racing and rose to prominence. He raced in American Junior Formula, winning the Skip Barber Formula Dodge series and finishing in the top five of the United States Formula Ford 2000 Championship. Luyendyk is well-known for his participation in the Indy Lights series. From 2002 to 2010, he competed full-time in the Indy Light series.
