Barbi Benton began modeling at the age of 16 to supplement her income. At the age of 18, I accepted a position with Playboy to feature on their entertainment program Playboy After Dark. She began as an extra on the program, but when host Hugh Hefner fell in love with Benton, she was soon promoted to co-host. Hefner and Barbi started a long-term friendship that placed Benton at the forefront of the Playboy enterprise. Barbara Klein was persuaded by Hefner to alter her name from Barbara Klein to the more marketable Barbi Benton. In 1974, she was credited with persuading Hugh Hefner to purchase the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills.

Benton (born Barbi Klein) was featured on the cover of Playboy four times: in July 1969, March 1970, May 1972, and December 1985, as well as in additional naked photo layouts on the December 1973 and January 1975 covers. Despite appearing in a variety of photo essays, she was never named Playmate of the Month.
