Professionally, Bill is an American bassist who also owns a record label and produces music. Laswell began his professional bass career in R&B and funk bands in Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan. He listened to shows by Iggy and the Stooges, MC5, and Funkadelic, among others, that fused genres.

Miles Davis, Albert Ayler, and John Coltrane were all influences on him. Laswell moved to New York City in the late 1970s and became active in the expanding local music scene. He moved into producer Giorgio Gomelsky’s loft and joined a band that would later become the original Material.

He collaborated with artists such as Brian Eno, Fred Frith, John Zorn, Daniel Ponce, Ginger Baker, Peter Brötzmann, Kip Hanrahan, and Sonny Sharrock.

Bill and Martin Bisi established a music studio and met Jean Karakos of Celluloid Records. Laswell’s debut solo album was Baselines. Later, on Herbie Hancock’s album Future Shock, he co-wrote and produced “Rockit.”

He played bass guitar on the record and co-wrote other songs, so they collaborated more in the 2000s. He won a Grammy for his work on Hancock’s subsequent album, Sound-System. With Peter Brötzmann, Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Sonny Sharrock, he formed the band Last Exit in 1986. In November 2018, he performed with Dave Douglas’ Uplift band at the London Jazz Festival.
