Carl Reiner was born to watchmaker Irving and Bessie Reiner. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland. His father was born in Austria, and his mother in Romania. Charlie, his older brother, served in WWII and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. When Charlie was 16, he read in the New York Daily News about a free dramatic workshop put on by the Works Progress Administration. He then informed Carl. His uncle Harry Mathias was the family’s first comedian. Previously, he had worked as a machinist, repairing sewing machines.
