As a freshman, he assists in defeating Stanford and advancing to the World College Series final four. Close was drafted in the seventh round of the 1986 MBL Draft by the New York Yankees.

He had previously played minor league baseball for the Oneonta Yankees (1986), Albany Colonie Yankees (1987-1988), Columbus Clippers (1988), and Calgary Cannons (1989-1990). Furthermore, he had his best season in Calgary, where he batted.330 with a.523 slugging percentage, 38 extra-base hits, and 56 RBIs in 95 games.
