Charles Martinet was born on September 17, 1955. He is of French ancestry and speaks both French and Spanish very well. When he was 12 years old, his family first relocated to Barcelona and subsequently to Paris. Charles began his studies at the University of California, Berkeley, where he intended to major in international law, but gave up when his professor forced him to read aloud from his book, chapter by chapter.

Glossophobia, or the dread of speaking in front of an audience, affected him. Then, one of his buddies advised him to enroll in acting classes once he could face his phobia. His first duty was to perform a monologue from “Spoon River Anthology.” In the end, Berkeley Repertory Theatre provided Charles with an apprenticeship. He spent years honing his craft with Berkeley Repertory before moving to London to study at the “Drama Studio London.” He discovered his aptitude for accents and dialects there along with a number of other abilities. He later joined Berkeley Repertory Theatre after coming back to California. Charles joined the San Jose Repertory Theatre as a founding member and held that position for four years.
