Charles began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu at a young age under Roger Coelho. In 2003, at the age of 12, he won his first major title as a white belt. In 2010, Ericson Cardoso and Jorge “Macaco” Patino awarded him his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. Later, in 2007, he began his amateur and then professional MMA career in his home country of Brazil, where he amassed a 12-0 record with six knockouts and five submissions. He made his professional debut in March 2008 at the Predator FC 9 Welterweight Grand Prix event. Similarly, he submitted Jackson Pontes to advance to the tournament’s second round.

His second stage fight was against Viscardi Andrade, whom he TKO’d to advance to the tournament’s final round. He also won the tournament after TKOing Diego Braga in the first round.
