Charlie Ward won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Davey O’Brien Award as a quarterback for the Florida State University football team in 1993, and later led the Seminoles to their first National Championship when they defeated Nebraska 18–16 in the Orange Bowl.

The Seminoles’ only game of the season was against Notre Dame, which was ranked second. Nonetheless, when the Irish were defeated at home by Boston College a week later, their path to the National Championship was opened.

Ward was an indispensable member of the team, completing 70% of his passes and averaging 6 yards per carry. Ward wins the Heisman Trophy by 1,622 points after setting academic records with 27 rushing touchdowns and 3,371 offensive yards.
