Her father, Simpson, served in the United States Air Force. Unfortunately, both of her parents have died. Cheryl was born on Christmas Day, the fourth of five children in her family. She is the eldest of four siblings, with three sisters and one brother.

Cheryl appeared on the TV show “Romper Room” as a child. She even appeared on “Star Search” a few years ago. Burton’s broadcasting career began in 1989 at Chicago’s WGN-TV. She began her career as a co-anchor on the nationally syndicated weekly series “MBR: The Minority Business Report.” She relocated to Peoria, Illinois, two years later, to work as a reporter for WMBD-TV. She then worked for two years at KWCH-DT in Wichita, Kansas. She later joined WLS-TV in 1992. She started as a weekend co-anchor/reporter here. She was then promoted to 5 p.m. weekday co-anchor and 10 p.m. contributing anchor in 2003. She took over as the 10 p.m. anchor alongside Alan Krashesky a few years ago, in 2018. She did, however, continue to host the 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. shows on WCIU-TV.
