Bill Self began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas in 1985, where he stayed until 1986. He then became an assistant coach at Oklahoma State University, where he stayed from 1986 to 1993. Furthermore, his first head coaching position was at Oral Roberts, where he was hired in 1993.

During his first year at ORU, the team only won six games. He coached this team for four seasons. Later, he was hired by Tulsa, where he spent three seasons (1998-2000), compiling a Tulsa-best 74-27 record.

He was named head coach at the University of Kansas in 2003. During his 19 seasons as head coach, he has led the Jayhawks to 16 Big 12 regular season titles, including an NCAA record 14 straight Big 12 regular season titles, some of which were shared (2005–2018).

In addition, he led the Jayhawks to NCAA championships in 2008 and 2022, as well as four appearances in the NCAA Final Four (2008, 2012, 2018, and 2022). He finished the 2021-22 season as the fourth-winningest active head coach and the 18th-winningest Division I coach in NCAA history.

Only Hall of Famer Phog Allen has more wins as a coach in Kansas history, and he is the only one to have led the Jayhawks to multiple NCAA championships. During his time at Kansas, he had three home-winning streaks of more than 30 games, including a school record and 11th-best all-time 69-game streak.

Following a loss to Kansas, he is 108-15 as of April 2022, with only three three-game losing streaks. He’s never had more than three losses in a row.
