Career

After redshirting, Helton became Auburn’s quarterback. After his father became a coach in Houston, Helton moved there.

He studied math and interdisciplinary science at Houston in 1994. In 16 games, Helton threw for 420 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions.

Helton attended Duke in 1995. Later, he was Fred Goldsmith’s graduate assistant at Duke. In 1996, Helton became running backs coach. In 1997, Helton joined his father at Houston as running backs coach. Kim Helton’s last season as coach.

Helton became Memphis’ running backs coach after leaving Houston. West replaced Scherer in 2001. Tommy West promoted Helton to wide receivers coach in 2003.
