Cliff Curtis has six brothers and sisters. His father was a part-time dancer. He is of Maori descent, with tribal ties to Ngati Hauiti and Te Arawa. His youth was filled with adversity. He had to deal with the death of his mother in a vehicle accident when he was three years old. His father was a heavy drinker.
