Cliff Curtis Childhood

Cliff Curtis has six brothers and sisters. His father was a part-time dancer. He is of Maori descent, with tribal ties to Ngati Hauiti and Te Arawa. His youth was filled with adversity. He had to deal with the death of his mother in a vehicle accident when he was three years old. His father was a heavy drinker. His father was unable to cope with the loss of his loving wife, leaving him sad. Cliff Curtis’ father abandoned him to his siblings to care for because he needs to get money to feed them. Because his wife died, he was now solely responsible for his eight children, and it was extremely difficult for him to cope with the circumstance while simultaneously providing them with a regular life. To relieve his aggravation, his father used to slap them. Cliff Curtis recently described his home life as a ‘Once were warriors scene every night’ in an interview.

That was the type of family he grew up in. They accepted it as a part of family life, and it is no longer a huge thing or a problem for them. Because his father was unable to care for all of them on his own, the family was divided among extended family members. Curtis was sent to the home of one of his aunts near the Bay of Plenty. He grew up in the area. However, he never said anything wrong to his father since he recognizes that his father did his best to provide a wonderful life for his children, but it was difficult on his part.
