When it comes to his career, he began playing football in high school. He led the school team to the Class 4A Division II State Championship. Furthermore, he returned to North Carolina Tech Preparatory Christian Academy for a brief post-graduation session.

Later, he transferred to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, where he joined the junior college football team. Patterson was an NJCAA All-American in 2010 and 2011. In his freshman year, he was also named return specialist after having 21 combined kickoff and punt returns.

During his record-breaking days at Hutchinson, his brilliance had spread across the country. Patterson enrolled at the University of Tennessee in 2012. He played wide receiver there, demonstrating his versatility as a running back and return specialist. He set the college record for most all-purpose yards (1,858) and won the Southeastern Conference championship.

Ultimately, he left college early for the NFL draft in January 2013, along with only a few other teammates. Patterson was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings in a draft-day trade with the New England Patriots in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

He was named NFC Teams Player of the Month in September 2013. Patterson had 45 receptions for 469 yards and five touchdowns in his rookie season.
