Dan Henderson was born on August 24, 1970, as Daniel Jeffery Henderson in Downey, California, USA. He was born alongside his brother Tom Henderson, and their father, Bill Henderson, was one of the coaches who helped them with their wrestling in high school. He was raised in Apple Valley, California, and began wrestling at a young age.

Career

Henderson began his wrestling career in high school, competing in championships in 1987 and 1988. He competed in the NCAA championships in 1993. He won the University championships in 1991, 1993, and 1994. He was also the senior national champion in 1993, 1994, and 1997.

He represented the United States in the Summer Olympics in 1992 and 1996. He also competed in two World Wrestling Championships in 1994 and 1997, finishing in 12th and 7th place, respectively. In the 1990s, he was a wrestling coach at Cerritos College. Following his defeat in the Olympics in 2000 and his trial for the World Team in 2001, he decided to pursue an MMA career.

Henderson began training for mixed martial arts (MMA) in 1997, and his first victory came at the Brazil Open Tournament. He competed in his second UFC tournament and defeated champions such as Allan Goes and Carlos Newton. His third tournament was Rings: the King of Kings, where he won five of the 32 fights.
