Danny Care was born in the English city of Leeds, West Yorkshire. Although his initial interest was football, he began playing rugby union at the age of six with his hometown club in Leeds, West Park Bramhope RUFC (now West Park Leeds RUFC). He was asked to join the Academy at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club at the age of 11, which meant he had to give up club rugby union, however, he was permitted to continue playing at Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley.

He assisted Prince Henry’s in winning the Under-13 Yorkshire Cup in 2000, but he missed practically all of the next season due to a fractured leg suffered in a school game. He was forced to pick between football and rugby union the next season, and he requested Sheffield Wednesday to release him from his Academy contract so that he could focus on rugby union; at the conclusion of the season, he had been named for Yorkshire Schools’ Under-15’s. This was his first taste of representative rugby, and he was named man-of-the-match in the Roses’ encounter against Lancashire at Pontefract. In May 2002, he was a member of the West Yorkshire squad that won the first Under-15 National 10-a-side Festival, which was held in Manchester’s Commonwealth Games stadium.

• Care spent the season as fly-half for Prince Henry’s, helping them win the Under-18 Yorkshire Cup and a stunning triumph at Twickenham in the final of the Daily Mail Under-18 Vase, scoring 13 points in an 18-11 win against St Columba’s College from St Albans.
• The season concluded with him being named to the England Clubs Under-18 team for the Four Nations Tournament in Belfast, where he competed against Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. He was also called up late to the England Under-19s substitution bench against Ireland, however, he did not play.
• The next season, Care made his first XV debut as a second-half substitute on the wing for Leeds Tykes in a pre-season friendly against Exeter Chiefs.
• His sustained engagement with the England Under-19 team led to his selection for Team England in the rugby sevens at the 2004 Commonwealth Youth Games in Bendigo, Australia, his first exposure to the format. England won silver after losing the Final 26-24 to the hosts, Australia. Care scored seven tries throughout the event, earning him the competition’s leading try scorer.
• He was nominated to the senior England Sevens team’s core roster early in the 2005-06 season, and he made his debut in the IRB Sevens series in Wellington in February 2006. England defeated France in the Cup quarterfinals before defeating Argentina in the Plate final. The group then flew to Los Angeles, where they defeated Fiji in the Cup final to claim England’s first-ever victory in the USA phase of the IRB Sevens.

• During the tournament, he earned four caps, including a start against Ireland in the fifth and final game. Care scored the opening try in England’s 32-8 triumph, putting them in fifth place, their best-ever result in the tournament.
• Care began the season understudying Samoan international Steve So’oialo at scrum-half for Harlequins, but following a string of poor losses, the club brought in the veteran Andy Gomarsall, a member of England’s World Cup-winning side in 2003.
