David Boes was born on March 11, 1941, in the farming community of Sycamore, Illinois. His parents were educators. He has dyslexia and struggles to read and write. Boies’ mother used to read him stories, which he memorized because he couldn’t follow the words in the book.

His family relocated to California when he was 13 years old, and he attended Fullerton Union High School. Boes received his B.S. from Northwestern University in 1964, his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1966, and his LL.M. from New York University School of Law in 1967. He received an honorary LL.D. from the University of Redlands in 2000.

David Boies began his legal career in 1966 as an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore. In 1973, he joined the law firm as a partner. He left Cravath four years after one of their major clients objected to his representation of the New York Yankees.

He established his law firm, Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, within 24 hours of leaving the firm. His first case was against the music streaming service Napster, which he lost. Boies’ first significant victory came in the United States v. Microsoft Corp. Simultaneously; he represented CBS in the libel suit Westmoreland v. CBS.

He represented then-Vice President Al Gore in the case of Bush v. Gore in 2000. The case was also adapted into a television film, Recount, starring actor Ed Begley Jr. He negotiated a significant settlement with The American International Group on behalf of its client, C. V. Starr. He also obtained an agreement worth $2.25 billion from Visa and $1.8 billion from MasterCard on behalf of American Express.

Boes represented filmmaker Michael Moore in a case involving the Treasury Department while filming in Cuba. He represented Jamie McCourt in her divorce from her husband in 2010. He was also a member of the legal team that represented the National Football League in the Brady v. NFL case.
