Career

David Geffen co-founded Asylum Records in 1970 with Elliot Roberts, a buddy from his time at William Morris. Geffen signed several of the most prominent rock & roll artists of the early 1970s, including Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, and The Eagles. He felt suffocated by the corporate decision-making framework and requested a less controlled portfolio. In 1980, Geffen returned to his first love, the music business, and began gobbling up new and established talent. Geffen renewed his record contract with Warner Bros. in 1984, retaining a 100 percent ownership interest in the business.

Geffen sold his music business to the Music Corporation of America (MCA) in March 1990 for $6.13 million and $50 million in stock options. He immediately founded DGC, a new record label he hoped would attract cutting-edge bands. His movie company produced the hits Interview with the Vampire, Beavis, and Butthead Do America. Dreamworks, the movie studio, announced plans in 1999 to create Pop.com, an internet entertainment company offering short films, streaming videos, live events, games, video games, performance art, and continuing series.
