Deborah Ross started her legal career as a tax litigator and municipal bond lawyer after graduating from law school. Ross was elected to the North Carolina General Assembly for the first time in 2002. After that, she beat Wake County Commissioner Phil Jeffreys for a second term in 2004.

She then won the 2006 general election with no opposition. She was then chosen as one of the House Democratic Whips for the first time in 2007. Ross resigned from her role as Go Triangle’s legal counsel in 2015. She then campaigned for the United States Senate in 2016. In March 2016, she won the N.C. Senate Democratic primary with 62.4% of the vote. Following that, Ross campaigned in the general election against the incumbent, Republican Richard Burr. In December 2019, she ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina. This election was conducted in March 2020, and Ross won.
