Dick Cavett was born in Gibbon, Nebraska. Both his father Alva B Cavett and mother Erabel “Era” (née Richards) were educators in Comstock, Gibbon, and Grand Island. His maternal grandparents were Rev. R.R. and Etta Mae Richards, while his paternal grandparents were Alva A Cavett and Gertrude Pinsch.

Dick Cavett went to Wasmer Elementary School for kindergarten. He attended Lincoln High School as well as the Capitol, Prescott, and Irving schools for his education. When he was ten, his mother passed away at the age of 36. His father remarried, this time to Dorcas Deland, a fellow educator. In the beginning, Cavett had trouble getting a work. He was working numerous jobs. He was only able to obtain a copyboy position at Time magazine. The Tonight Show was mentioned there, and Jack Paar, the host at the time, was having issues with his opening monologue, he also learned this information.
