Dick Goddard was an American television meteorologist, novelist, animal activist, and cartoonist. Dick Goddard spent nearly five decades as the meteorologist for Fox Broadcasting Company-affiliated television station WJW-TV. Similarly, he was recognized by Guinness World Records for having the longest career as a weather forecaster.

Dick Goddard was born in Akron, Ohio, on February 24, 1931. Vatchel Goddard is his father, and Doris Goddard is his mother. His father was a mechanic for a Railway Express Agency, while his mother was a stay-at-home mom. Both of his parents were fourth-graders. Between his birth to 1941, he and his parents lived in Akron. In 1941, the family relocated to a tiny farm in Greensburg, Ohio, which has since been renamed Green. When he was four, his father took him to Michigan to fish. In 1973, he ceased fishing. In 1949, he graduated from Green High School, which is now in Green, Ohio. While in school, he participated in football, baseball, and basketball.

Additionally, he played basketball and led his senior class to the Class B championships. Additionally, he made his Cleveland Browns debut in August 1948 in Akron. He studied acting and radio at Kent State University.

Dick Goddard was hospitalized in January 2020 with pneumonia. On May 13, 2020, her daughter Kim reported that he was ill. Career

Dick Goddard enlisted in the United States Air Force following his tryout at Firestone Park for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He began his meteorology career upon graduation by serving in the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1955 when he took meteorological classes. Additionally, he received fundamental training at Sampson Air Force Base. His most famous duty was predicting the United States Atomic Energy Commission’s atmospheric nuclear weapons tests.

At the Akron-Canton Airport, he joined the National Weather Service. He joined Westinghouse Broadcasting’s KYW-TV in Cleveland’s weather department in 1960. In June 1965, he and other employees agreed to relocate to WRCV-TV in Philadelphia from KYW-TV. He returned to Cleveland, though, a few months later. In 1966, he was hired as chief meteorologist at WJW-TV, where he remained for the remainder of his career. Since returning to Cleveland, he has worked as the official statistician for the NFL’s Cleveland Browns.

From August 1977 until January 1979, he also hosted WJW’s Bowling for Dollars game show. Additionally, he made multiple appearances on WJW’s famed Big Chuck and Lil’ John Show over the years. In December 2014, he secured a multi-year contract renewal with WJW at 83. On May 18, 2016, he stated that he would step down from his weather duties in November 2016. After delivering his final forecast, he stepped down from the station on November 22, 2016.

Additionally, he was an outspoken opponent of animal maltreatment. The Ohio General Assembly introduced a bill, dubbed his Law, in 2013 to strengthen the severity of punishments for abuse. It was reintroduced in 2015. Additionally, on June 13, 2016, the 2015 version was signed into law.
