Donald Sutherland was born in 1935 to Dorothy Isobel and Frederick McLea Sutherland, both of whom worked in sales and ran the local gas, electricity, and bus company. Saint John, in the province of New Brunswick, is where he was born.

He is primarily of German, Scottish, and English descent. As a child, the actor had hepatitis, rheumatic fever, and poliomyelitis. When he was 14 years old, the actor got his first part-time job as a news correspondent for a local radio station called CKBW.

Donald Sutherland began his career after resigning from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art by spending a year and a half at the Perth Repertory Theatre in Scotland (abbreviated as LAMDA).

From the early to mid-1960s, he received minor roles in British films and television (such as a hotel administrator in The Sentimental Agent episode ‘A Very Desirable Plot’).
