Ed Catmull Biography

Edwin Catmull was born on March 31, 1945, in Parkersburg, West Virginia. His father, who raised him and his four siblings, was the high school principal. In his early years, he was less interested in movies and more interested in math, physics, and computer science. However, he had always wished to meet Walt Disney.

Ed Catmull received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah. For a short time, he worked as a computer programmer at The Boeing Company in Seattle. He became interested in graphics while studying under Ivan Sutherland at university. He went to school with Fred Parke, James H. Clark, John Warnock, and Alan Kay.

Catmull became interested in this theory after noticing Sutherland’s computer graphics in animation. Catmull discovered three fundamental computer graphics concepts during his tenure: Z buffering, texture mapping, and bicubic patches.

Career

In 1979, Catmull moved to northern California to work for Lucasfilm Ltd. The studio, named after its founder, Star Wars executive George Lucas, was also interested in producing a completely PC-enlivened element film. Catmull was brought in to establish this division.

A portion of Catmull’s mechanical leaps forward during this time found their way into Lucas’ various tasks, such as bringing a lonely planet to life in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982.

Catmull created a capable exploration group working with 2D liveliness, focusing on instruments that could aid the artists in their work. Among the developments was a paint program simply called Paint, which appeared to be an early version of Disney’s CAPS, the business activity program Tween.

At Lucasfilm, he developed advanced picture compositing technology that was used to convincingly combine various images. Following that, in 1986, Steve Jobs purchased Lucasfilm’s advanced division and founded Pixar, where Catmull became Chief Technical Officer. He was a key RenderMan delivery framework at Pixar, used in films such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo.

After Disney acquired Pixar in January 2006, Disney CEO Bob Iger charged Catmull and John Lasseter with revitalizing the Disney animation studios.
