Elijah Cummings Biography
Elijah Cummings was born on January 18, 1951, in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States. He is Ruth Elma and Robert Cummings’ son. He grew up on a sharecropping farm with his parents. Cummings and some friends worked to integrate a segregated swimming pool in South Baltimore when he was 11 years old. Furthermore, he was the third of seven children.
Education
Cummings graduated from Baltimore City College high school with honors in 1969. He then attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he served in the student government as sophomore class president, treasurer, and later president. He joined the Phi Beta Kappa Society and earned a Bachelor of Political Science in 1973. Cummings made his Juris Doctorate from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1976. Later that year, he was admitted to the Maryland bar. Furthermore, he practiced law for 19 years before being elected to the House for the first time in 1996.
