Gary Harris signed a national letter of intent in November 2011 to play college basketball for Michigan State University. As a sophomore, he led Hamilton SE to a 17–4 record, averaging 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals. As a junior in 2010–11, he led the Royals to a 20–4 record and a trip to the Class 4A regional finals, averaging 18.6 points, 5.0 blocks, 3.0 assists, and 2.7 steals per game en route to the school’s second sectional championship.
