Gavin Newsom was born in San Francisco and is a fourth-generation San Franciscan. Tessa Thomas and William Alfred Newsom III were his parents. He attended Redwood High School and graduated in 1985. He was a baseball and basketball player in high school. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Santa Clara University in 1989, relying on a baseball scholarship and student loans. At 24, Gavin and other investors founded PlumpJack Associates, which later became PlumpJack Winery.

Gavin Newsom is a businessman who, before entering politics, ran successful businesses, including PlumpJack Associates L.P, which he founded in 1992 with other investors, PlumpJack Winery, which the same group founded, PlumpJack Café, which PlumpJack Café Partners L.P founded in 1993, and many other PlumpJack companies.

Gavin’s political experience dates back to 1995, when he volunteered to run a successful campaign for Will Brown. He was later appointed alongside Brown to fill a vacancy in the Traffic and Parking Department, where he was later appointed as a commission.

Gavin was elected mayor of San Francisco in 2003, receiving 41.9 percent of the total votes cast and finishing first out of nine candidates. Newsom was elected to a second term as Mayor of San Francisco in 2007. He won this election with 72 percent of the vote cast, despite earlier attempts by the San Francisco Progressive Community to run other strong candidates against him.

In April 2009, he announced his intention to run for the California gubernatorial seat in the 2010 elections; despite receiving an endorsement from Bill Clinton in support of his bid, he was forced to withdraw from the race due to low poll numbers throughout the campaign. Gavin then filed paperwork to express his interest in becoming California’s lieutenant governor in February 2010, won the election in November 2010, and was re-elected for a second term in November 2014.

In 2018, he was elected Governor of California by a landslide over his opponents. To this day, he is the governor of California.
