Geddy Lee Weinrib was born on July 29, 1953, in Ontario, Canada, as Gary Lee Weinrib to Mary Weinrib and Morris Weinrib.
He had his bar mitzvah at 13 and was raised as a Jew. In Willowdale, Toronto, Canada, he attended Fisherville Junior High School. When he was nine years old, he began performing.
Lee and his friends converted their basement into a practice space while still in high school. He dropped out of school to pursue a career as a performer.

Geddy Lee co-founded the rock band Rush with Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson in 1968. They began performing professionally in recreational events, high school dances, and coffeehouses a year later.
