Cole started his amateur career at Orange Lutheran High School. As a sophomore, he pitched for the junior varsity baseball team at his school. However, it wasn’t until his junior year that he gained national attention for his fastball, which reached 94 mph.

Furthermore, in his senior year, he earned an average run of 0.47 while striking out 121 batters in 75 innings. In 2008, Cole was named to USA Today’s All-USA high school baseball team following his senior year. During the same year, he was drafted by the New York Yankees in the Major League Baseball draft.
