Meyer has loved volleyball since she was in elementary school. She was chosen in all areas as a junior in high school.

She began playing as a freshman at Florida Gulf Coast University in 2011. She was named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen team and the A-Sun All-Academic team. She was also a member of FGCU’s first sand volleyball team. She was named to the A-Sun Preseason All-Conference team in 2012.

Meyer was named Atlantic Sun Setter of the Year her senior year. She led the conference in assists per set with 11.57 as FGCU finished second in the A-Sun with a 19-11 record. Gisela played in all 125 games for FGCU and set a school record with 4,363 assists. She was named academic all-conference twice.

Gisella won the title by defeating Shawna Hoffman, a well-known wakeboarder who had competed for Team USA in the IWSF Wakeboard World Championships. Gisella had never imagined herself winning anything. It was just her hobby, and she entered the competition with no intention of winning.

Meyer stated that her interest in wakeboarding began when she was 10 years old. Her snowboarding had melted by that point, and she went to a friend’s lake house for the first time to try wakeboarding.

She became addicted to it after that. So, when her parents were looking for a getaway near Gainesville. They considered a beach house, but Gisela persuaded them to go with a lake house.

Gisela met Andy Wilcox, a former professional trick skier and Gators fan who taught Meyer her first invert when she was 14 years old. At the age of 16, she stunned everyone with a black flip.
