Career

In 1970, Barwood launched his career with the short film The Great Walled City of Xan, which he wrote, produced, and directed. As an animator, he worked on the first theatrical feature films and the social science fiction film THX 1138. He rose to prominence when he and Matthew Robbins were recruited to rewrite The Sugarland Express screenplay. It came out in 1974. Despite doing well at the box office, it was awarded Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival.

Later the same year, in 1976, he released his comedy sports picture The Bingo Long Travellin All-Stars and Motor Kings, which was nominated for AFI’s top ten sports film category. Following that, he and Robbins collaborated on MacArthur, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Spielberg. Close Encounters of the Third Kind was a critical and commercial triumph, generating more than $337 million worldwide.

In the years afterward, the team has written the Corvette Sunner and Dragonslayer. Barwood made his directorial debut in 1985 with The Warning Sign, which received mostly unfavorable reviews. While working with Dragonslayer, Barwood discovered he wanted to produce video games. He soon developed a second love for video game creation.
