At all levels, James Forrest excelled for South Ayr Boys Club. He was discovered when he was 11 years old by Celtic’s Ayrshire talent scout, Jim Began. Kilmarnock and Ayr United were also interested in him in addition to Rangers. His coach, Martin Millar, believes that joining Celtic’s Hamilton coaching school when he was 13 years old and signing a youth contract with them was crucial to his development.

On August 30, 2009, he agreed to a four-year contract with Celtic. On May 1 of the following season, against Motherwell, he made his first-team Celtic debut, coming on as a late substitute and scoring the club’s third goal in a 4-0 triumph.
