James started his career at the weekly newspaper The Village Voice, initially in the circulation department, fielding phone calls. He quickly got a job as a receptionist. Following that, he started working as a writer for Esquire’s magazine on media and pop culture. He then worked as a writer for Harper’s Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, and New York Magazine.

Wolcott soon started working for Vanity Fair. He was recruited to Vanity Fair by the late Leo Lerman, who was the magazine’s editor at the time. Wolcott’s debut book, The Catsitters, was released in 2001. He authored “Attack Poodles and Other Media Mutants” in 2004, a criticism of right-wing media in the United States. Furthermore, he just wrote the preface to Geoffrey Beene’s next book, Identity. In October 2011, his book “Lucking Out: My Life Getting Down and Semi-Dirty in Seventies New York” was released.
