He made his debut in 1993 with MELLO YELLO 500. In 1994, he was named NASCAR WINSTON CUP SERIES ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, and in 1995, he raced alongside Yarborough and finished eighth in the MILLER GENUINE DRAFT 500. He joined the Kranefuss Haas team in 1997.

He won two races and four pole positions in 2000. He was the winner of the second and third series cups. He once crashed into a wall while practicing for the BRICKYARD 400.
