Joanne Woodward is the daughter of Elinor and Wade Woodward, Jr., a vice president at the publishing firm Charles Scribner’s Son. Her mother’s love of movies inspired her to pursue a career as an actress. Woodward was born in Thomasville and raised there until she was in the second grade.

Her family later relocated to Marietta, Georgia, where she attended Marietta High School. She still supports her high school and the Strand Theater in the city.
