After graduating from Sewanee: The University of the South, Joe B. Hall went on to tour with the Harlem Globetrotters before returning to Kentucky to finish his undergraduate education. Hall earned his bachelor’s degree in 1955 from the University of Kentucky. Before coming to Kentucky in 1965, Joe B. Hall had previously coached at the University of Central Missouri (originally Central Missouri State University) and Regis University and had served as an assistant coach under Adolph Rupp.

On April 1, 1972, after Roop attained the obligatory retirement age of 70, Joe B. Hall was voted as the next coach. In his opening words for the position, he said unequivocally that he would recruit black players (the program’s first three players were black). Joe B. Hall won the National Coach of the Year award in 1978 and the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year award four times.
