John Gotti was born in the South Bronx, New York, on October 27, 1940. J. Joseph Gotti is John’s father, and Fannie Gotti is his mother. They were both Italian immigrants. John was the fifth of 13 children in a family whose only source of income was their father’s erratic work as a day laborer. Furthermore, his family moved frequently before settling in East New York, a gang-infested neighborhood.

Gotti was working as an errand boy in an underground club run by the head of the local largest organized crime family, Gambino, Carmine Fatico, when he was 12 years old. John Gotti met Aniello Dellacroce, who became his lifelong mentor through his club activities. Gotti rose to the position of captain of the ‘Fulton-Rockaway’ gang, a gang known for frequent robberies and carjackings.
