Similarly, in college, he plated both offensive and defensive lines. In 1954, John played one season at the College of San Mateo before receiving a football scholarship to the University of Oregon. Similarly, he studied pre-law alongside childhood pal John Robinson. However, due to a knee injury and subsequent surgery, he was unable to begin his NFL career. Similarly, he played both offense and defense for the Mustangs in 1957 and 1958, earning a BS in Education in 1959 and an MA in Education in 1961.
