Philip was born on March 11, 1971, to Philip Clapp Sr. and Lemoyne Clapp in Knoxville, Tennessee. He left South-Young High School in 1989 with his diploma and moved to California to start his acting career. John wed Melanie Lynn Cates in 1995. Madison, their daughter, was born in 1996. Their union, however, did not survive, as Knoxville himself requested a divorce in 2007. Knoxville and his girlfriend Naomi Nelson made their pregnancy public in 2009. In 2009, Rocko Akira Clapp, their son, was born. Arlo Lemoyne Yoko was born in 2011 after the couple wed in 2010.

He worked as an extra in numerous shows and advertisements after relocating to Los Angeles. Big Brother, a skateboarding publication, was intrigued by Knoxville’s plan to test self-defense tools on his own. Then, Big Brother recorded this video and used it in one of his videos.
