Juan de Dios Ventura Soriano, better known as Johnny Ventura, was a Dominican singer and merengue and salsa bandleader. He is best known for his albums “Cuidado Con el Cuabero” from 1963 and “Ah…! Yo No Se…No” from 1971. He previously won a singing competition hosted by La Voz de la Alegria when he was sixteen years old. Ventura, dubbed the “Elvis of merengue” by some in the music industry, released hundreds of recordings over the course of his 60-year career. He received six Latin Music Grammys, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 for his “great artistic contributions to Latin music,” according to the Latin Recording Academy. In addition, he served as Santo Domingo’s deputy mayor from 1994 to 1998, then as mayor from 1998 to 2002. On July 28, 2021, we sadly lost such a versatile figure.

Career

Johnny Ventura began his singing career by appearing in radio programs, after which he made his television debut in the show La TV busca una Estrella.

He subsequently returned to the same competition, where he practiced, worked, and was crowned for the hit as well as winning first prize. He also won numerous prizes in devotees’ programs before receiving the much-coveted scholarship from the television business.

Later, he studied music, vocal methods, and expression, and he became one of Latin America’s most recognized singers. Furthermore, the late vocalist began his music career in the early 1960s after joining a number of Latin music orchestras.

He recorded “Cuidado Con el Cuabero,” which he wrote, and “La Agarradera,” which Luis Perez wrote. With this band, he released his debut LP, which consisted of 12 songs.

Then, in 1963, he was hired by musical director Papa Molina to join La Super Orquesta San Jose as a singer and guira player.

In 1964, he founded his own ensemble, the “Combo Show,” which is regarded as a significant element of the history of popular Dominican music.

Johnny recorded the albums “La Coquetona,” “La Resbalosa,” and “El Turun Tun Tun” for the Fonogram label in 1965 and proceeded to the United States, where he quickly became a success in 1967.
