Kerry Earnhardt’s mother was Dale Earnhardt’s first wife, and Dale was only 18 years old and a local North Carolina dirt racer when Kerry was born. Kerry was only a year old when the couple divorced. Dale’s first wife, Latane, was then married to Jack Key, who also adopted the Kerry surname and used his stepfather’s surname for the majority of his life. Dale was unknown to him until the age of 16.

Kerry dropped out of high school and worked a variety of jobs to support his family before beginning his racing career. He worked at Pizza Hut before moving on to Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, North Carolina, where his grandfather, Ralph Earnhardt, used to work.

Kerry also raced race cars in the early 1990s before entering the racing world as a competitor in 1992 racing street stocks. Kerry raced in the NASCAR Goody’s Dash Series the same season, and he raced at various tracks in 1993. It includes the East Carolina Motor Speedway in Robersonville, North Carolina, as well as the Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia.

Kerry made his Winston Cup debut for Marcis Auto Racing in Michigan in 2000, competing against his father Dale Earnhardt and his other half-brother, Dale Earnhardt Jr. He crashed out of the race on the fifth lap, and his father was killed at Daytona in 2001.
