Kevin broke into a computer network in 1979; a buddy provided him with Ark’s contact information, and he hacked the Digital Equipment Corporation’s computer network. Mitnick created a copy of the computer software, and as a result, he was arrested and sentenced to twelve months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He later hacked Pacific Bell’s voice mail computers. According to the United States Department of Justice, Kevin attacked numerous computer networks and stole software codes from major computer and telecommunications businesses. Mitnick was apprehended by the FBI in 1995 in his North Carolina home and charged with computer and wire fraud. He even breached Yahoo’s security. The hacker was apprehended for his actions. Kevin pleaded guilty to wire fraud and other computer-related offenses in 1999 and received a sentence of forty-six months in prison, plus twenty-two months for violating the computer fraud provisions of his 1989 supervised release. Mitnick served a five-year jail sentence, including eight months in solitary confinement. Mitnick was released from prison in 2000 and was barred from using any communications technology for three years. He appealed this ruling and acquired the right to utilize it afterward.
