Terence Thomas’s Childhood Kevin O’Leary was born in 1954 in Quebec, Canada, to an Irish father, Terry O’Leary, and a Lebanese mother, Georgette. He has a brother with whom they were raised. When he was a child, his father divorced his mother and later died of alcoholism.

O’Leary’s mother was a business executive and an expert investor. Following her husband’s death, she married George Kanawaty, whose job required the family to relocate to various locations. Still, O’Leary attended Stanstead College, St. George’s School, and the University of Waterloo, where he graduated with a B. Kevin O’Leary began his career in 1979 as an assistant brand manager for Nabisco’s cat food brand, then co-founded Special Event Television, which produced sports, documentaries, and minor television shows. He eventually sold his stake in the company.

With the proceeds from selling SET, he relocated to Toronto and established Softkey in his basement. Softkey used to be involved in the publishing and distribution of CD-ROM-based software. In 1990, the company prospered because it dealt with educational software products.

Softkey paid $600 million for The Learning Company (TLC) in 1995, owing to rising profits. Despite paying $400 million for Broderbund, the company lost money for the next two years. TLC was then sold to Matter for $4.2 billion in 1999. This was one of the most disastrous acquisitions in history because Mattel did not make any profits and lost $3 billion in shareholder value. The loss was devastating, and Mattel sued O’Leary for deceiving them, but he denied the charges.
