Kim Janey Biography

Kim Michelle Janey, better known as Kim Janey, was born on May 16, 1965, in Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. She is currently 59 years old and a citizen of the United States. Furthermore, she is of African-American descent and a devout Christian.

Clifford B. Janey (father) and Phyllis Janey (mother) are her parents (mother). Her father was a teacher and a school administrator in Boston. Career

Kim Janey worked as a community organizer for Parents United for Child Care before entering politics. She later joined Massachusetts Advocated for Children, a non-profit organization. She also held a number of designatory positions before being appointed Senior Project Director in 2001.

Kim was elected to the City Council for the first time in November 2017. In District 7, she will represent Roxbury and parts of Dorchester, South End, and Fenway. In addition, she received 25% of the vote in the Democratic primary in September, defeating a field of thirteen candidates.

After winning the primary, she challenged the other major candidate, Rufus Faulk, in the general election. She went on to defeat her opponents in the general election, winning with 55.5 percent of the vote.

In January 2018, she was sworn in as the first woman to represent District 7 on the council. During her first tenure, she also spearheaded efforts to pass a municipal ordinance that altered the way the city granted marijuana shop licenses, establishing an independent board to evaluate applications.

Until she changed the process, the Mayor’s office issued licenses. In November 2019, she was re-elected with more than 70% of the vote in her constituency. Furthermore, since her reelection to the Council, she has focused on education and social justice.

She also believes that the process by which members of the Boston School Committee are chosen should be changed. The mayor currently appoints them; she proposes holding school committee elections again. After serving on the City Council for some time, her fellow Councilors elected her as President of the City Council in January 2020. Furthermore, in March 2021, she became the city’s first female and black mayor, making history as the city’s first female and black mayor.

After former mayor Martin Walsh was confirmed by the US Senate, she took over as Secretary of Labor in President Joe Biden’s cabinet on March 22, 2021. She was elected as Boston’s 55th mayor shortly after Martin’s resignation became effective. Her inauguration date was March 24, 2021.
