Liz Truss beat UK Foreign Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday to become the third woman to be elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, after Boris Johnson, who served from 2019 to 2022. According to CNBC, around 81,326 Conservative Party members voted for Truss, while almost 60,399 voted for Sunak. Following the election, the latter moved to Twitter to congratulate those who voted for him and to rally party members in favor of Truss.

Meanwhile, Liz Truss joined the stage to express gratitude to party workers and 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady, who announced the results:

“It is a privilege to have been chosen leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party.” I’d want to thank Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee. I’d like to congratulate the party’s team for organizing one of the world’s longest job interviews.”

She also expressed gratitude to her opponent, Rishi Sunak, and departing Prime Minister Boris Johnson:

“I’d want to express my gratitude to our departing leader, my friend Boris Johnson.” Boris, you completed Brexit. You smashed Jeremy Corbyn and administered the vaccine. And you defied Vladimir Putin. From Kyiv to Carlisle, you were adored.”

The newly elected Prime Minister also revealed some of the pledges she intends to keep during the next two years:

“I will provide an ambitious proposal to decrease taxes while growing our economy.” I will address the energy problem by addressing people’s energy expenses as well as the long-term difficulties we have with energy supply. And I will fulfill my commitment to the National Health Service.”

 

Liz Truss also said that she “campaigned as a Conservative,” that she would “govern as a Conservative,” and that she will “deliver a fantastic triumph for the Conservative Party in 2024.”

Truss served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Childcare and Education from 2012 to 2014, and was named Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs after the 2014 cabinet reshuffle. Following Cameron’s departure in 2016, Liz Truss was named Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor, becoming the first female Lord Chancellor in the country’s 1,000-year history.

During the 2017 general election, she was named Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Boris Johnson appointed Truss as Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade after May’s departure in 2019. That same year, the politician was named Minister for Women and Equalities before being appointed Foreign Secretary by Johnson at the 2021 cabinet reshuffle.

Truss is married to fellow accountant Hugh O’Leary and has two kids with him. According to reports, the formal celebration will be held in the Queen’s Scottish retreat Balmoral Castle, where she is presently residing, rather than Buckingham Palace, as the queen continues to struggle with mobility concerns. Liz Truss and Boris Johnson are expected to go to Balmoral this week to perform their formal duties.
