Maggi Hambling was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, on October 23, 1945. Hambling had two siblings: an 11-year-old sister named Ann and a nine-year-old brother named Roger. Her younger brother had wished for a younger sibling, but he ignored the fact that his new sibling was a girl and taught her woodworking and “how to wring a chicken’s neck.” Hambling had a close relationship with her mother, who taught ballroom dance and had Hambling as her partner. Her artistic abilities were inherited from her father. She didn’t have the same relationship with her father as she did with her mother, but when he retired, she gave him some oil paints and discovered he had a talent for painting.

At the Amberfield School in Nacton, Hambling first studied art with Yvonne Drewry. She went on to study at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Benton End from 1960 to 1969, where she studied under Cedric Morris and Lett Haines, then at Ipswich School of Art (1962–64), Camberwell (1964–67), and lastly the Slade School of Art at UCL, where she graduated in 1969.
