At the Naval Base in Port Hueneme, California, Maria was born on September 3, 1970. She was taken to a Navy doctor and spent her childhood years in Duluth, Minnesota. Before transferring to Duluth Marshall School, she first attended Chester Park Elementary School in Minnesota.

She added that she had anxiety problems as a child, which troubled her, and she frequently experienced depression. Her obsessive-compulsive condition was also present. She subsequently headed to Bates College after graduating but was later transferred to the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where she began her junior year. She also became a member of The Improvers, a college comedy troupe.

She returned to her home state after spending a year in Scotland, enrolled in the University of Minnesota, and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in creative writing. When Maria was just 19 years old, she started her stand-up career in Minneapolis.
