Similarly, her elementary school teachers gave her the name ‘Matilda.’ Her parents were Mary Raffa and Carmelo “Charles” Raffa. They came to the United States from Sicily. Carmelo, her father, was a businessman. Her father and mother died in 1988 and 1995, respectively. She has three brothers, Frank, Sam, and Joseph, as well as a younger sister, Nancy. Matilda is also of Italian descent and of American nationality.

Matilda started kindergarten at a Brooklyn public school. She then attended Midwood High School. She continued her studies in education at St. John’s University in Queens, where she graduated in 1954. Similarly, she met her love interest at the same university.

She served as chairperson until 1995. She then served as the head of the New York State Decade of the Child project.

Matilda edited the Mentoring USA nonprofit organization’s book “The Person Who Changed My Life: Prominent Americans Recall Their Mentors.” Her book about mentoring was released in 1999. However, it was published with Hillary Clinton in 2002 and 2012. Similarly, she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and spoke about her work in support of mentoring programs. Cuomo was also a member of the Governor’s Commission on Child Care. She was the chairman of the New York Citizens’ Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention. Matilda helped numerous children and women during her professional career.

Their love affair, however, lasted 64 years until Mario’s death in 2015.

They have three daughters, Margaret, Maria, and Madeline Cuomo, as well as two sons, Andrew Cuomo and Chris Cuomo. They have all followed in their parent’s footsteps.
