Matt Barneswas born in Santa Clara, California, to a Caucasian mother and an African American father, was always interested in and involved in sports. Del Campo High School, where he attended, was a breeding ground for his athletic success, with him graduating as a letterman in basketball and football. In both sports, he received All-American, All-State, All-CIF, All-City, and All-League honors. Jason, his brother, played in the Canadian Football League.

Career

After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the University of California, where he played collegiate basketball, launching his professional career. In 2001, he was named All-Pacific-10 Honorable Mention, and the following year, he was drafted by the NBA.

Barnes was the 46th overall pick by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2002 NBA Draft. Barnes and Nick Anderson were traded for Wesley Person by the Cleveland Cavaliers simultaneously. He was later assigned to the NBA D-League by the Cavaliers, and he played for the Fayetteville Patriots in the 2002-03 NBA season.

After demonstrating his skill, he joined the ABA’s Long Beach Jam in 2003, where he played alongside Dennis Rodman. While the team won the ABA championship with a 24-7, Barnes averaged 18.9 points and 6.8 rebounds and earned a contract with the Los Angeles Clippers for the second half of the season.
